18-year-old Auburn man killed, woman seriously injured in head-on crash, CHP says

An 18-year-old Auburn man was killed and a 78-year-old woman hospitalized with serious injuries following a head-on crash Monday evening in Nevada County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened shortly after 5:45 p.m. on Rough and Ready Highway near Greenwood Road, just west of Grass Valley city limits, the CHP’s Grass Valley office said in a news release.

A 2008 Infiniti G37 heading westbound on Rough and Ready crossed into eastbound traffic, directly into the path of a 2019 Subaru WRX. The two vehicles collided head-on.

The Infiniti driver, an 18-year-old Auburn man, was not wearing a seat belt and suffered “severe” head trauma from the crash, CHP officials wrote. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Subaru driver, a 78-year-old Grass Valley woman, was taken to a hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP, and was then transferred to a different hospital.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, according to the CHP news release.

The Auburn driver’s identity will be released by the Nevada County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
