15 people test positive for COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin

May 11—An additional 15 Northwestern Wisconsin residents tested positive for COVID-19, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Tuesday, May 11.

They were reported as follows: five in each Burnett and Douglas counties; two in Sawyer County; one each in Ashland, Iron and Washburn counties. No new cases were reported in Bayfield, Price, Rusk and Taylor counties.

Statewide, an additional 517 cases were reported Tuesday, DHS said, bringing the total to 603,820.

An additional 13 deaths reported statewide Tuesday, including one person in Washburn County, bringing the total to 6,917, DHS said. Overall, 1.1% of people who have contracted the virus have died.

The seven-day average of positive COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin dropped to just above 500 daily new infections. On Tuesday, the figure was 503. The seven-day average of positive cases measures the average number of new cases per day over the previous week. An overall decrease in the seven-day average of positive cases indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in the state is also going down, according to DHS.

The number of negative tests in the state was 2,885,355 Tuesday, an increase of 2,496.

An additional 70 people have been hospitalized because of the virus since Monday, bringing the total to 29,901. Overall, 5% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized. Two people in Douglas County and one person in each Burnett and Taylor counties were among those hospitalized.

Tuesday's report also showed that 97.6% of the people who have tested positive for the virus have recovered. That means 1.3%, or 7,831 cases, are currently active.

DHS also reports that 4,724,130 doses of vaccine have been administered by Tuesday with 2,591,069 Wisconsin residents, 44.5% of the population, receiving at least one dose of vaccine, and 2,192,002 people completing the vaccine series.
