The rolling hills of Northeast Ohio should be ready for sledding Monday morning with no school and some area workers off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The National Weather Service is forecasting 4 to 8 inches of thick and heavy snow cover in the Akron-Canton area, and even more to the east in Portage County. Lake effect snow Monday and below freezing temperatures provide ideal sledding conditions through at least Wednesday when icy rain is forecasted.
Polar Blast Tubing at Brandywine is closed and there's no indication of the understaffed resort opening for the season.
Two-hour sledding slots, which must be reserved in advance, are almost entirely booked for the rest of the season at Snow Trails in Mansfield.
Travel could be treacherous with the weather service warning of “snow covered roads and slippery conditions.” And motorists may not be willing to brave longer drives to renowned sledding spots like “Ohio’s winter playground” at Punderson State Park (11755 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township) or the 700-foot snow chutes at The Chalet (16200 Valley Parkway in Strongsville).
That leaves the region’s several local hills where park officials allow sledding for free at your own risk.
The following are a few local tubing or sledding spots, including some lit up at night:
