February is Black History Month. If you're looking to take part in an observance, here's a list of some of the events on the calendar this month.

University of Southern Indiana

Black Reproductive Health: Getting at the Root Cause of Inequity

Feb. 27, 4:30 p.m., Carter Hall at UC West, 8600 University Blvd.

Dr. Rachel R. Hardeman will give a guest lecture on structural racism disadvantages that Blacks face before, during and after pregnancy, leading to inequities for them and their babies.

Evansville African American Museum

Black History Month Unity Choir Concert

Feb. 19, Old National Events Plaza, 715 Locust St. Free.

This event taps into the rich history of mass choirs in Evansville. Donations from this event will benefit children's programming at the museum.

Children's Center For Dance Education

'Amazing Grace'

Several dates throughout the month. Free.

The Children's Center for Dance Education is putting on shows around the Tri-State, telling Black history through music and movemnt with narrator Zola Johnson. Performances are free thanks to a underwriting from the Arts Council of Southwest Indiana.

  • Feb. 5: 3 p.m., Newburgh Library, 30 W Water St, Newburgh, Indiana.

  • Feb.11: 2 p.m., Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Science, 411 SE Riverside Drive.

  • Feb. 17: 12:45 p.m., Evans Elementary School , 2727 N Evans Ave.; 2 p.m., Stockwell Elementary 2501 N. Stockwell Road.

  • Feb. 18: 2 p.m., CMOe, 22 SE 5th St.

Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library events

Black History Month art contest

All month, EVPL East, 840 E. Chandler Ave.

EVPL invites students from across the community to submit a piece of art that represents what Black History Month means to them. The art will be on display during the month of February before a special program later in the month. Participants must drop off their art with an official registration form attached to EVPL East by Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.

Cookbook Club

EVPL East, 840 E. Chandler Ave.

Each month, the club has a theme where you can choose a cookbook from EVPL's collection or your own and bring a dish to share. The theme for February is Soul food/African American/Creole for Black History Month. To register for the meeting, email Kathleen Kania at kathleenk@evpl.org or call 812-428-8231.

African American Read-In

Feb. 13, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., EVPL North Park, 960 Koehler Drive

Join the African-American Read-In, with your favorite passage by an African-American author to share.

Black History Month art show and concert

Feb. 17, 5 p.m. EVPL East, 840 E. Chandler Ave.

Students that participated in the art contest and guests are invited to discuss their art pieces with the community, enjoy live music by Zion, and have snacks and drinks while viewing the pieces.

Black History Month film

Feb. 18, 1 to 4 p.m., EVPL McCollough, 5115 Washington Ave.

Celebrate Black History Month by watching a surprise major release with an audience. Food will be available.

Screening of PBS' 'American Experience: The Abolitionists'

Feb .19, 1 to 5 p.m., EVPL Central, 200 SE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Originally aired in 2013, this film brings to life the stories of the radicals and liberators who fought against slavery during the Civil War and beyond. This film shows the stories of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown and their journey as abolitionists.
