1 person dead, 1 seriously injured in Champaign County crash

Dec. 7—One person was killed and one person was seriously injured Tuesday morning as a result of a fiery, head-on crash.

A 2018 Hyundai Sonata was headed north just before 10:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Clark Road when the driver went left of center and struck a 2019 Buick Encore head-on that was headed in the opposite direction, according to a release from the Champaign County Sheriff's Office.

Bystanders pulled the Hyundai driver from the car, which caught fire. However, despite attempted lifesaving measures by bystanders and medics, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash victim's name was withheld pending notification of family.

The impact forced the Buick to travel off the right side of the road, where it rolled onto its side. The driver, a woman who was seriously injured, was trapped and had to be freed by emergency crews before they took her to an area hospital, the release stated.

The crash remains under investigation.
