Man dies in fiery crash on Watterson Expressway

A man died after two vehicles collided and one of them burst into flames on eastbound Interstate 264 at Breckinridge Lane early Sunday morning.

Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said officers from the department's traffic unit responded to the scene on the Watterson Expressway around 4 a.m. and found one of the vehicles engulfed in flames.

Dominique Johnson, the 33-year-old man inside the burning car, was pronounced dead at the scene. The person driving the other vehicle, Maria Lara, was charged with murder, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, assault and criminal mischief, according to a document provided by the Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk's office.

The document says Lara remembered turning on her car while leaving a bar, then she blacked out and the next thing she remembered was the crash. A witness reported that Lara was weaving prior to the collision and almost hit a center concrete wall before ultimately striking the rear of Johnson's car.

Lara's passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to University of Louisville hospital for treatment.

Mitchell said all eastbound lanes of the interstate between Taylorsville Road and Breckinridge Lane were closed as officers were on scene, but have since reopened.

The accident remains under investigation.
