Buckeye police killed a man suspected of shooting his father on Sunday.

Around 3 p.m. Sunday, several people called 911 about shots fired near Verrado Way and McDowell Road, according to Buckeye Police Assistant Chief Bob Sanders.

A responding officer got out of his vehicle when he found two men fighting on the sidewalk. The officer said he saw one man standing over the other with a knife in his hand. The man refused to drop the knife so the officer shot him, Sanders said.

The men are believed to be father and son. The man who the officer shot, who is believed to be the son, died. The man believed to be the father was in stable condition at the hospital with several gunshot wounds in his abdomen.

Officers retrieved a knife and a handgun on the sidewalk. No officers were injured, police said.

The officer who killed the man has been with Buckeye police for two years and was placed on administrative leave while the shooting was investigated, which is a standard practice among police departments. The Glendale Police Department will investigate the shooting, Sanders said.
