Deadly shooting close to Northlake Mall one of 3 homicides Saturday in Charlotte

Police have identified a 23-year-old man who was killed in a shooting in the early morning hours Saturday near Northlake Mall in Charlotte.

It happened around 1 a.m., near a mall entrance, close to Interstate 77 and W.T. Harris Boulevard, on Northlake Mall Drive, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officials said previously. Armani Donovick Spencer was killed and two other people were injured, according to CMPD.

The homicide was among three that occurred in about two hours on Saturday. Police gave no indication the violent incidents were related. No arrests have been reported in the cases.

The homicides were the 75th, 76th and 77th of 2022 in Charlotte, according to a Charlotte Observer database of killings in the city that includes whether police have made arrests in the cases.

Each year, Charlotte has about 100 homicides. Most victims are killed by gunfire, and police solve most of the cases, according to the Observer review of cases.

Shooting on Sumter Avenue

On Sunday, CMPD released the name of the 27-year-old man who was found dead after being shot just before 2 a.m., Saturday, in the 1700 block of Sumter Avenue, off West Trade Street and Rozzelles Ferry Road northwest of uptown.

Few details about the shooting have been released. According to CMPD, the victim was Catoine Tyreke Funderburk.

Driver on South Tryon Street dies

In another shooting also around 2 a.m., officers say they were first called about a car crash on South Tryon Street, near West Arrowood Road in the Steele Creek area. When police arrived, CMPD officials said, they found a driver who’d been shot.

The driver, 22-year-old Jamir Quincy Rucks, died later at a hospital, police said.
