Among the star-studded crowd that packed Fashion Group International‘s Annual Night of Stars event on Thursday evening in New York City, actress Zosia Mamet and her eccentric style stood out. Bedecked in white and silver pieces from the H&M Conscious collection, the star was there to present the sustainability award to Daniel Kulle, president of H&M North America.

And on a night that was designed to celebrate nonconformists, Mamet’s sheer black bra-revealing top, unique white embellished trousers, and silver pumps were anything but ordinary. The 28-year-old, newly married actress also opted for heavy eye makeup and dark brows.

The actress says she doesn’t have a signature look, though. “I feel like my fashion is sort of full of dichotomy. I love something incredibly simple, and I also love the weirdest, zaniest thing you can find. I guess sort of adventurous and comfortable,” Mamet tells Yahoo Style. She proves that aesthetic when speaking about what items she would grab out of her closet to feel confident and amazing with only 10 minutes to prep.

“Fall is my favorite season, so we’re gonna go that route,” she says. “I have a pair of black Wranglers that are boys’ … boot-cut. I found them for $12. And I have an oversize black turtleneck that was my dad’s that I stole from him. With probably my Kate Spade leather jacket and my Breaking Hearts & Burning Rubber boots, which are my friend Leslie’s. She makes these amazing snakeskin boots that I live in. Just a little simple, a little funky, and super comfortable. I would say that’s kind of my foolproof [look].”

Mamet might not be a staple in the fashion industry, but in her speech to honor Kulle on Thursday she had the crowd rolling in their seats, sharing a relatable anecdote about a sock losing its mate in the wash.

“I don’t know if anyone else is with me on this, but one of the things that plagues me deeply in life is when I’m folding laundry and I find one sock that doesn’t have a pair. And then you do that thing where you’re like, ‘Maybe it’s stuck in the fitted sheet?’ And then it’s not there,” she said. “And then you’re like, ‘Maybe it’s in the pillow case?’ And then it’s not there. And then you’re like, ‘This sock has lost its mate forever, and now it has no purpose and it’s just going to be a sad, lonely sock.’ But you don’t want to throw it away because then you’re admitting defeat. So it just sits in your drawers, this sad reminder. But don’t fret, because H&M has created a home and a purpose for that sock.”

She cleverly tied the humorous tale to H&M’s sustainability initiatives and the work H&M has put into advancing the concept, and then she took a serious moment to address Kulle and the hard work the retailer has put into the concept.

“This is a time in our world that our planet needs all the help that it can get — and then some,” she said. “People that have the power and the resources to give that help need to answer this call to arms, and H&M has done that in a very, very big way by creating affordable, accessible, chic, and sustainable fashion.”
