Zlatan Ibrahimović scored his 500th career goal on Saturday night– and what’s more, he hit the incredible landmark with a mystifying goal that only he could have scored.

Here’s how it went: with LA Galaxy 3-0 down against Toronto FC, the 36-year-old's side needed a bit of magic. The Swedish striker ran into the box as the ball was launched in, but found himself facing away from goal with little space or time to manoeuvre.

Most players would have tried their luck with an awkward header, or nodded the ball down to set up a teammate. Zlatan had other plans.

It’s one of those shots you need to watch over and over again, on slow-motion, to actually figure out. Alas, despite a spirited fight back from LA Galaxy in which they score two more goals in the space of 4 minutes, Toronto FC ran away with a 5–3 victory.

This all still leaves him over a hundred goals behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but joining the 500 club is still an amazing achievement all the same.

For his part, Zlatan said he was happy for Toronto. Not because they won, but because "they will be remembered as my 500th victim."
