'Zip Code Day': Durham marks once-in-a-century event on Friday, 03/08/24

DURHAM — A once-in-a-century event is unfolding in Durham on Friday.

For the first time since March 8, 1924, the college town is celebrating its “Zip Code Day,” the event in which the numerals of the calendar date matches Durham’s zip code: 03824.

“For us, every day is ‘Durham Day’ but it’s nice every hundred years to have the nationwide postal community celebrating our 03824 zip code, whether they know it or not,” Town Administrator Todd Selig said Friday.

Since being incorporated in 1732, the town has previously had its “Zip Code Day” come up only twice before, in 1924 and 1824.

Residents have the opportunity to ring in “Zip Code Day” with a commemorative stamp decorated with a depiction of the University of New Hampshire wildcat. All letters or cards mailed out on Friday are eligible for the stamp.

The town announced two opportunities for residents to have the stamp posted to their mailings on Friday. The first was held at the university’s Memorial Union Building on Main Street from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., while the second will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the town post office at 2 Madbury Road.

The celebratory postmark is additionally available for passports, photos and collectors’ items, the town noted.
