New Zion Market location expected to open this summer

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A Korean supermarket in San Diego is shutting its doors, but not for good. Zion Market in Kearny Mesa is undergoing a massive redevelopment and preparing for a big move to a new location, less than a mile from its current spot.

According to Kevin Hwang, whose family owns Zion Market, the business will move from 7655 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. to 8330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. due to their current lease ending. He says the new site is expected to open sometime in July or August.

Hwang describes the new site as “the epicenter of activity in the Convoy area,” a district that is known among San Diegans as a Pan-Asian cultural hub with small businesses offering culinary delights ranging from ramen, dim sum and sushi to Korean barbeque, hot pot and boba.

The new Zion Market will offer the same experience, Hwang says. Businesses such as Marugame Udon, Bafang Dumpling, EM Coffee, Tang Japanese BBQ and more are expected to join the redevelopment.

The existing Paris Baguette in the market’s current building will also join the new space. The other food and beverage vendors will be located in what will be known as the “culinary village” or on the “rooftop night market,” the new features that come with the redevelopment, Hwang says.

While Zion Market will be about 50,000 square feet, the entire plaza included in the redevelopment is expected to be about 150,000 square feet featuring restaurant, retail and office space.

Zion Market also has other locations across California in Los Angeles, Irvine and Buena Park as well as Lewisville, Tex. and Duluth, Ga.
