Due to a protracted supply deficit in Ukraine’s power grid, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the population to moderate their use of household appliances.

In his May 17 evening address, the president reiterated that Ukraine's energy system has lost a significant portion of its generation capacity due to Russian attacks in recent months.

Zelensky said he chaired a "detailed and prolonged" meeting to discuss the crisis with the country’s energy infrastructure, attended by PM Denys Shmyhal, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, military officials, and representatives from utility companies.

“Following Russian strikes, our energy sector has lost a substantial part of its generation capacity,” he said.

“Time is needed for recovery. Significant efforts are required to develop new energy infrastructure that can operate despite the threat of Russian terrorism.”

Some of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants will soon undergo annual maintenance, further reducing national electricity output.

"Therefore, there is now a need for very rational, thoughtful electricity consumption," Zelesnkyy explained.

He added that local authorities and utility companies must inform the public about scheduled power outages, peak load hours, and the necessity of "mindful consumption by each individual."
