Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Kharkiv Oblast and met with the commander of Ukrainian units deployed to the region, Zelenskyy’s press service reported on April 9.

Gen. Yuriy Halushkin briefed the head of state on the operational situation in his area and the military's defense planning in case of another Russian offensive.

Zelenskyy presented state awards to the military. He also awarded police officers and emergency workers who deal with the aftermath of Russian strikes on Kharkiv.

"I am honored to be here today," said the president.

“It is not easy for Kharkiv. But thanks to strong people like you, life is being preserved here. And I am confident that there will be a victory in Kharkiv and in our entire country.”

Zelenskyy also inspected defenses and fortifications near the Russian border in Kharkiv Oblast.

Kharkiv Oblast is a "very important area," and the Russians "must see that we are ready to defend ourselves," said Zelenskyy. Ukraine is prepared for a possible enemy offensive, he added.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said that an extensive system of trenches, dugouts, and other shelters has been erected near the border with Russia.

The President's Office said that the fortification plan was developed by the Defense Ministry, taking into account the experience of troops in southern and eastern Ukraine.
