Zelenskyy highlights Global Peace Summit's role beyond Ukraine

The first Global Peace Summit, scheduled for June 15-16, will serve as a platform to discuss ways to achieve comprehensive, just, and lasting peace for Ukraine following the UN Charter and international law, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X on May 2.
Heads of state and governments from around the world are expected to gather at the summit, demonstrating their commitment to these principles. "I am certain that every peace-loving nation in the world is interested in attending the summit, because its significance extends far beyond Ukraine," Zelenskyy stated. He highlighted the broader implications for global roles, respect for international law, and peaceful coexistence.

The rules outlined in the UN Charter protect all nations from attack and violence, and it is "our shared global responsibility" to protect them through "real action rather than just words," Zelenskyy said.
"This is what the first Peace Summit in Switzerland is all about," he said.
The summit's organization is a collaborative effort between Ukraine and Switzerland, following a series of meetings among national security advisors to discuss Ukraine's Peace Formula.

Preparations for the summit were announced on January 15 by Zelenskyy and Swiss President Viola Amherd. Bloomberg reports that 80 to 100 countries are expected to participate in the event aimed at forging a common understanding of how to achieve a comprehensive and just peace for Ukraine.

Notable attendees may include U.S. President Joe Biden, and French President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed France's involvement, citing close collaboration with nations dedicated to fostering peace under international law.
However, amidst these preparations, Zelenskyy raised concerns on April 24 about potential disruptions by Russia, describing it as a terrorist state aiming to hinder the peace efforts. Consequently, Russian representatives have not been invited to the summit, as Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba explained on May 1, due to doubts about Russia's commitment to genuine peace efforts.
