Zelenskyy condemns attack on Slovak PM Fico, urges end to violence

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemns the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico that took place on May 15, the Ukrainian leader’s X post reads.

"The attack on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is appalling," Zelenskyy said.

“We strongly condemn this act of violence against our neighboring partner state's head of government.”

The international community should make every effort to ensure that "violence does not become the norm in any country, form, or sphere," he added.

"We sincerely hope Robert Fico recovers soon and express our solidarity with the people of Slovakia," the head of state said.

The attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico

The PM of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was shot near the building of the Slovak parliament on the afternoon of May 15.

Slovak media reported that Fico approached people in the street, after which several shots were fired and the politician fell to the ground.

A Denník N reporter saw the prime minister being lifted off the ground by security guards, transferred to a car and driven away.

Slovak law enforcement officers reportedly detained the alleged attacker and cordoned off the scene of the shooting.

Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová confirmed that Fico had been shot.

"I strongly condemn today's brutal and ruthless attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico," she wrote on Facebook.

“I am in shock. I wish Robert Fico a lot of strength in this critical moment to recover from the attack.”

Fico is in serious condition, but his life is not in danger, news outlet Plus one day reported.

According to the sources, Fico was shot 2-3 times, allegedly in the limbs, chest and stomach. Up to 4-5 shots could have been fired.

According to media reports, someone in the crowd shouted "Robo, come here," and then the shooting started.
