Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the West to provide further military aid to defend against Russian airstrikes, during a trip to Lithuania.

"For us, air defence is the point number one, priority number one," he said on Thursday after meeting with his counterpart Gitanas Nauseda in Vilnius. He will also take part there in a summit of the so-called Three Seas Initiative states.

Zelensky referred to overnight Russian missile attacks on the regions of Kharkiv, Odessa, Zaporizhzhya and Kiev. "For us it is the biggest challenges for today," he emphasized.

Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for almost two years and is largely dependent on Western support for its equipment.

At the meeting in Vilnius, Zelensky plans to discuss further arms aid for his country with the heads of state of the Three Seas Initiative.

He signed a bilateral security agreement with his Latvian counterpart, Edgars Rinkevics, in which Latvia undertakes to provide Ukraine with annual military support to the value of 0.25% of its economic output.

The Three Seas Initiative brings together 13 EU member states situated along the north-south axis between the Baltic, Adriatic and Black Seas.
