New Zealand names Commonwealth Games athletes

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — World and Olympic shot put champion Valerie Adams was among the first contingent of New Zealand athletes named Monday to compete at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Adams won the women's shot at the Beijing and London Olympics and has won gold medals at the last four world championships. She is unbeaten in her past 45 major competitions.

Nick Willis, the 1,500 meters silver medalist in Beijing, was also named Monday among an initial group of 11 athletes who have met qualifying standards.

The Glasgow games will be held from July 23 to August 3.
