Zara faces boycott calls in Israel

STORY: As he lit a piece of Zara clothing on fire... the mayor of the Israeli city of Rahat called for people to boycott the retailer.

It comes after a local TV station reported that ultranationalist politician Itamar Ben-Gvir attended a roundtable hosted by the chairman of Trimera brands.

Trimera holds the Israel franchise for Zara, which operates 24 stores in the country - 1,800 globally.

Israel's Labor Party leader said she wouldn't shop at Zara in Israel anymore, according to local media.

And she's not alone.

"I will no longer buy any products from Zara or Zara Group, not only in Israel but also abroad."

"I'm a Palestinian, I'm against him now. I'm not going to visit his stores."

Spokespeople for the Trimera chair and Zara described the event as private.

Zara is owned by Spain's Inditex, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As for Ben-Gvir, polls predict a joint ticket of his party and others will win up to 14 of parliament's 120 seats in next week's election.

That means he could become a potential kingmaker of a future conservative coalition... and inflame long-strained ties between Israeli Jews and the Arab minority.
