Zara to close downtown San Francisco store

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Zara is the latest of several retailers who recently announced they will be closing a downtown San Francisco location. The clothing store will be shutting its doors for good in January 2025.

Zara’s lease for the 250 Post St. location will be expiring January 2025, a company spokesperson told KRON4. Zara said it will not be renewing its lease at the Union Square building.

However, there will still be a Zara store in downtown SF. Located a few blocks away, the location inside the Emporium Centre mall will remain open, the spokesperson added.

A few stores down, The North Face announced this week it will be closing its only San Francisco store. The North Face, which was founded in San Francisco, will have its final day of business in Union Square sometime this month.

Last week, Macy’s announced it will be closing its iconic Union Square location. The closures add to the list of retailers leaving the San Francisco downtown area, especially in the Emporium Centre (formerly called SF Centre and Westfield). See below for a list of closures to begin 2024.

Retailer Opening in Union Square

Despite many businesses leaving San Francisco and its downtown area, some are moving or have moved in. That includes IKEA, which opened a location on Market Street last August, and Banana Republic.

Luxury Swiss watch brand Patek Philippe is opening on Post Street across from the Zara store. A sign in front of the future store says Patek Philippe is opening “Spring/Summer 2024.”

KRON4 reached out to San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin for comment about the recent closures. Peskin oversees District 3, which includes Union Square. We are waiting for a response.
