Plans to build ten underground secondary schools and make major repairs to ten others in Ukraine’s southeastern frontline Zaporizhzhya Oblast were announced by the region's governor, Ivan Fedorov, in his April 26 Telegram post.

Fedorov discussed these plans with the Education and Science Minister Oksen Lisovyi at an education forum in Zaporizhzhya. He expressed gratitude to parents, educators, school principals, department heads, education officials, community representatives, police, rescuers, and representatives of the State Consumer Service for working together to implement these plans.

"This is joint work and shared responsibility,” he said.

“Today we unite to overcome both educational and human losses. Today, we are building a powerful platform for the future of our children and Zaporizhzhya Oblast."

Last October, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said that the city was embarking on a ground-breaking initiative to build the country’s first underground school, aimed at protecting children during Russian attacks.
