Young married couple dies after vehicle plummets 660 feet into Santorini ravine

Two British tourists were killed when their off-road vehicle accidentally rolled off a cliff and plunged into a ravine in Greece on Sunday.

Toby and Milly Savill, 26 and 25 years old respectively, were visiting Santorini when they rented an 800CC-motor off-road vehicle to explore the peak of Profitis Ilias, the tallest mountain on the island and a popular tourist spot, the Sun reports.

A representative from the vehicle rental agency told the British outlet that while on the mountain, the couple tried to turn the buggy around in the middle of the road but made a miscalculation, causing their vehicle to roll off the path and fall approximately 660 feet into a ravine.

"[The driver] put the buggy in reverse, moved back thinking [they] had enough space, but by the time [they] realized [the] mistake, the weight of the buggy was drawing [them] backward and it fell into the ravine," he said, adding that it was "the most tragic accident."

It remains unclear which person was operating the buggy at the time of the crash.

Toby Savill was hired as a history teacher at Ark Evelyn Grace Academy in September 2018, the BBC reports. Milly Saville taught at St. Anne's Catholic primary school and was described by headteacher Catherine Davis as a "much-loved member of staff."

The pair, who married in August 2017, met at Durham University in the United Kingdom through the school's Christian union.

Simon Coulson, Milly's father, told the Sun that his daughter was "an outstanding teacher."

"The children absolutely loved her, the staff absolutely loved her," he said. "Probably everyone makes out their children were saints but these ones really were."

A spokesman from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office released a statement following the tragedy.

"Our staff are assisting the families of two British people who have died on the island of Santorini, and are in contact with the Greek authorities," the organization said.
