Young Florida girl struck, killed by car on her way to elementary school

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A young girl has died after being hit by a car in Port Orange before school Friday morning, NBC affiliate WESH reports.

Police reportedly responded to the scene around 7:15 a.m. outside of Sugar Mill Elementary School.

WESH reported the young girl, a student at the school, was struck at the entrance by a vehicle that had just dropped off another student.

The Volusia County School District said the girl was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash.

Despite life-saving procedures by Port Orange police on the scene, the girl was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital in Daytona Beach, WESH reported.

The school district is reportedly alerting parents and families and plans to have grief counselors on campus.

Police said the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
