Young family recovering after flood damages Ashford home

ASHFORD, Ala (WDHN) — It was a typical Monday morning for young mom Courtney Coker. She woke up, went to work around 5:00 a.m., and tried to avoid the heavy rains that drenched Houston County.

But her calm morning turned when, around 8:00 a.m., she received a call from her boyfriend telling her their home was flooding.

Coker’s boyfriend woke up to find around two inches of water covering every floor of their home on Academy Drive in Ashford.

Coker says the waters reached around two feet, and first responders evacuated her boyfriend and young daughter at around 9:40 a.m.

Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza told WDHN that Ashford Firefighters had to evacuate several people from their homes on Academy Drive after water flooded the road and began rushing into homes.

Eventually, the waters subsided in the home, leaving Coker and her boyfriend with a mess. They discovered toys, furniture, clothes, appliances, and more were soaked and possibly ruined.

Coker says, for now, they found shelter and her boyfriend’s mother’s home and are awaiting word from their insurance company on how to move forward.
