Young boy’s life ‘tragically taken’ by fatal shooting in Portsmouth, police say

A 10-year-old boy was killed in a shooting Friday night in Portsmouth.

“I met with the mother and extended family of the young boy, whose life was tragically taken, and they were distraught over their son’s death,” Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen Jenkins said in a statement. “As the top officer of the Portsmouth Police Department, I am outraged over another young life taken over neighborhood disputes.”

Police responded to a report of a shooting on the 30 block of Farragut Street at about 6:13 p.m. Officers
found the victim with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital and later died, according to police.

Police investigations are ongoing.
