York Suburban Girls win PIAA District III Class 5A Championship in OT

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) — It took overtime, but York Suburban won the school’s first ever PIAA District III title 37-35 over Northern on Friday, March 1, 2023.

The Trojans built a six-point lead at the end of the third, 22-16. York Suburban’s Lydia Powers ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to build the lead. The Polar Bears stormed back to tie the game with less than 23 seconds to play.

In overtime, York Suburban’s Janay Rissmiller knocked down a pair for free throws to take a 36-35 lead with 19.3 seconds to play. Then Paige Garner sealed it with another at the line as the Trojans win 37-35.

The PIAA District III Championships were held inside Giant Center on Wednesday, February 28 through Friday, March 1.
