York Revolution ink four more players for 2024 season

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – The York Revolution announced the addition of four more players to the 2024 roster on Monday.

Right-handed pitchers Alex Valverde and Moises Lugo, infielder Jamari Baylor and catcher Cieran Devenney have all been signed to the Revolution.

Valverde has played for three different organizations throughout the first six seasons of his professional career. The 27-year-old reached Triple-A Syracuse last season, working mostly as a starter. Valverde has played equally in the rotation and bullpen in his career.

“I’ve heard really good things about him,” said Revolution manager Rick Forney. “I’m anxious to see him throw. He’s got a nice four-pitch mix. . . I have some high expectations for Alex.”

Valverde was a 22nd-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2017 draft. The Coral Gables, Florida native reached Double-A with the Rays in 2021 before joining the New York Mets in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

Valverde wrapped up the 2023 season in Double-A Arkansas with Seattle. Valverde posted a 4.88 ERA with a career strikeout rate of 8.7 per nine innings over the last six seasons. In 2019, Valverde also played in the Arizona Fall League where he earned one run in 10 innings with the Salt River Rafters.

Lugo spent the last two seasons with Triple-A El Paso with the San Diego Padres. The 25-year-old struck out 69 hitters across 49.2 innings.

Lugo signed with the Padres in 2017 where he stayed in the system for six years. Lugo had a 3.69 ERA with 380 strikeouts over 319.2 innings. Lugo’s career marks are 23-12 with four saves in 137 appearances, with an 8-0 record between El Paso and Double-A San Antonio in 2022.

Baylor was a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019 and was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 2023. The Richmond, Virginia native hit .333 with seven home runs in Low-A Fresno.

“The career on-base percentage has been really good (for Baylor), and as he’s maturing, the bat-to-ball skills should hopefully improve as well,” Forney said. “He’s a dynamic player… He’s got some pop and can steal bags, so he’s going to have the ability to score runs for us.”

Devenney marks the first catcher signed to the 2024 roster. The 25-year-old hit .256 in 2021 with the Gary Southsore RailCats before joining the Frontier League with Tri-City. Deveney has played with Ri-City for the past two seasons but has seen limited action due to injury.

“(Devenney) throws really well and has a really nice swing, he just hasn’t had a ton of opportunity,” Forney said. “He’s hungry… I don’t think he’ll look out of place in York.”

The Revolution will begin their season on Thursday, April 25 at home against the Hagerstown Flying Box Cars.
