New York Mayor Calls Port Authority Explosion An Attempted Terrorist Attack
An explosion set off by a suspected suicide bomber went off Monday morning (Dec. 11), inuring four people.
Reports from a number of outlets like The New York Times and The New York Daily Post note the incident happened at 7:19 am ET. between the 7th and 8th Ave. passenger tunnel at the Port Authority Bus Terminal subway station. The tunnel connects passengers to the Times Square and Port Authority stations.
The suspect, who survived the explosion, is a 27-year-old who was born in Bangladesh and lived in Brooklyn for seven years. He is currently in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.
Authorities believe the suspect’s “low tech” devices, similar to a pipe bomb, went off prematurely, leaving suspicions that he did not act alone. Police also claim the suspect made statements about ISIS while in custody.
Before Mayor Bill de Blasio labeled the incident an attempted terrorist attack, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called out the actions of the suspect. “With the internet now, anyone can download garbage on how to put together an amateur level explosion device and that’s the reality we live in,” he said to reporters. “The counted reality is that this in New York and we are a savvy people and we look out for each other. We’re all working together exceptionally well on this.”
Surveillance video from the explosion shows the man walking in the tunnel with the device strapped to his person with wires and zip ties.
1, 2, 3, A, C, E, N, Q, R, W and 7 trains were skipping 42nd Street, but are expected to be running again.
The mayor also added that there were no other known terroristic threats to the city.
