The New York Giants have begun preparations for their Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers. Although their 2016 season has at least one more game, it isn’t too soon to think about the 2017 season as their opponents for next season are already set.

The NFL’s current scheduling formula was implemented in 2002 as a result of the last league realignment. The scheduling formula mandates all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.

Under the current formula, the breakdown of each’s NFL team’s 16-game regular season schedule is as follows:

Home and away games against the other three teams in its division (six games)
The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (four games)
The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (four games)

Two same conference division games are based on the prior year’s standings. These games pit a first-place team against the first-place team in the same conference division that the team is not scheduled to play during that season. Second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a division are matched using the same criteria.

The NFL scheduling formula will have the NFC East playing the AFC West and NFC West in 2017. Because the NFC East plays the NFC West, the two same conference division games will come from the NFC North and NFC South.

In addition to their home-and-away games against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins, the Giants host the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, and Seattle Seahawks. The Giants finished in second place and their home same conference division game will be against the Detroit Lions, who finished second in the NFC North.

The Giants will have away games at the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and San Francisco 49ers. Their away same conference division game will be at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who finished second in the NFC South.

The Giants’ longest road trip in 2016 (not counting playing the Rams in London) was to Dallas. They will face five teams in this season’s playoffs (Chiefs, Cowboys, Lions, Raiders, and Seahawks). Three other opponents (Broncos, Buccaneers, Redskins) failed to qualify for the postseason but finished above .500.

The finalized NFL schedule is usually released on the third Thursday in April. This year, that day is April 20.
