York County School of Technology sends bowler to Nationals for first time in program history

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – Aaliyah Hall has been bowling since she was eight years old and now, as a freshman at the York County School of Technology (YCST), she will be the first bowler to represent the school at Nationals.

“I didn’t expect to go that far, but anywhere after regionals was really good for me,” said Hall. “I was just there to bowl.”

The York, Pennsylvania native came in 13th place on March 15 at the Pennsylvania Girls Bowling Tournament with a 192 average to punch her ticket to Nationals.

“It was a different environment,” Hall said of the Tournament. “Oil patterns were definitely tough and different, but it was a great learning experience.”

YCST head bowling coach Zach Shoff knew Hall would be a good bowler for the program because he heard about her game even before she started at York Tech.

“People were (talking) about (Hall) before she actually got to Tech,” said Shoff. “(They were) saying there’s this girl she’s a two-hander, she bowls really well and I think she’s going to be some big things.”

Shoff said Hall lived up to all expectations when she joined the team.

“She progressed at a very rapid rate, which is impressive,” Shoff said. “I’ve been doing this now for 10 years, coaching this team, and never seen anyone come in with this quick of a grip on what we’ve been teaching.”

Hall’s career best is a 268-game.

“(Hall is) devoted, and you can see that with her other sports as well,” Shoff said. “It definitely showed this year in bowling. She was dedicated to all of her practices, she showed up every day, she worked hard (and) she learned.”

Hall is a tri-sport athlete. Besides bowling, Hall also plays volleyball and runs track.

“I feel like it’s a good way for me to spend my summer,” Hall said. “I never don’t have something to do.”

Hall said she will be happy wherever she places at Nationals because she is just proud of making it this far, but her coach is confident she will perform well.

“I think we are looking good,” Shoff said. “I’m confident on what she’s capable of doing. Her mental game is just as strong as her physical game, so I feel very confident in how she’s going to perform at Nationals.”

The High School Bowling National Championship will take place June 8-10 at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
