York County Detention Center fence damaged in strong weekend storm

YORK COUNTY, SC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A fence at the York County Detention Center was damaged in Saturday’s strong storm system, the Sheriff’s Office reports.

Officials say high winds on April 20 caused a portion of the outer fence to fall over. However, security was not compromised.

Inmates at the center have been placed on higher security and cannot access the affected area. Extra deputies are stationed outside the fence until the issue can be fixed.

Following the storm, Chief Jail Administrator John Hicks and York County maintenance crews reinforced the fence to prevent a full collapse.

Crews are currently working on repairs and officials say work should be done by Tuesday, April 23.
