New York City is hiring, here’s how to apply

HARLEM, N.Y. (PIX11) — There is a noticeable buzz on a Friday afternoon inside the Grant Houses Community Center.

New York City is hiring— and at the hiring hall hope is in the air with the city having just lifted a hiring freeze, a streamlined hiring process, and in many cases pay increases.

Over the last couple of years, many of the unions representing the city workforce have negotiated pay increases.

At the hiring hall, there were booths by both the city and private employers.

Some interviews were conducted on the spot, and there were additional educational resources available for people who realized they needed continuing education to apply for jobs in the future.

“The work is meaningful, holistic, and it will hopefully drive more people to seeing the City of New York as an employer of choice,” said Dawn Pinnock Commissioner of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

The office also just completed a streamlining of the minimum qualifications for around 20,000 different job titles– making it easier to fill especially hard-to-find positions like social service caseworkers– and correction officers.

Hiring halls in areas that sometimes lack economic opportunity, will spread the word about these changes in the coming months.

“We’re ultimately serving 8.3 million New Yorkers every day, so you want to make sure we are focusing on the relevant and pertinent qualifications needed to prefer those jobs well,” Pinnock said.
