After years of service, longtime Missouri Sheriff declines re-election bid

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — Big news out of Newton County today. Sheriff Chris Jennings announcing he will not run for re-election. This is Jennings’ second term as Sheriff.

Jennings issued a statement this afternoon saying that after 44 years in law enforcement, 32 of which have been with the sheriff’s office, he will retire.

He says his family encouraged him to retire after two recent health events.

Former Joplin Police Chief and Director of The Children’s Center, Matt Stewart has filed to run for the office.

“I will continue to do everything I can to serve the citizens and improve employee benefits,” says Jennings. “It has been a great honor for me to serve as your Sheriff.”

Jennings also issued an apology to his supporters and all those asking him to serve a third term.

“I am humbled by the confidence you have shown in me,” he says.
