A Yarmouth man sustained serious burns to his hands on Sunday afternoon after a battery exploded at his house, according to the fire department.

The Yarmouth Fire Department received a 911 call at 12:22 p.m. from the homeowner at 139 North Main St. in South Yarmouth to report a battery explosion with a fire. The caller reported the injured resident, but said all occupants were evacuated from the building.

The burn victim was treated on scene and then brought to the Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis where he was met by Boston MedFlight and taken for further care. No further information was available on Monday.

The fire was quickly brought under control with the fire damage contained to the area where it started. The Yarmouth Fire Department's fire investigator will investigate the cause, assisted by the town Department of Fire Services and the Yarmouth electrical inspector.

Mutual aid from Dennis and Hyannis firefighters were at the scene. Yarmouth police also provided assistance. Stations were covered by Barnstable, Chatham, Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills, and Harwich fire departments, and responded to other calls for service.

No other injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
