Beau DeMayo, the showrunner and executive producer behind Disney+'s upcoming animated series X-Men '97, has reportedly been fired.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeMayo had just completed writing the second season of X-Men '97 and was planning to attend the show's season one premiere today (March 13) ahead of his exit.

However, the publication reports that Marvel and DeMayo "suddenly parted ways" last week, with show's cast and crew having been informed he was "no longer on the project" after his company email was deactivated.

His Instagram account, on which he had been providing fans with updates on X-Men '97, has also been deleted. It has not yet been confirmed why DeMayo was let go.

X-Men '97 is a direct continuation of classic '90s series X-Men: The Animated Series, which will reunite some voice actors from the original for new adventures in the X-Mansion.

The includes Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Catherine Disher as Jean, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Chris Potter as Gambit, Christopher Britton as Mr Sinister and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

Alyson Court, who played Jubilee in the original series, is also returning, though she will voice a different character named Abscissa. Meanwhile, The Blacklist star Holly Chou steps into the role of Jubilee.

Previously explaining why she won't be voicing Jubilee, Court tweeted in 2020: "I will not voice Jubilee [again]. It was an honor to bring life and voice to such an iconic character in the original series, but I know far too many talented young Asian actors who would do Jubilee justice now."

X-Men '97's official synopsis reads: "Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all."

X-Men '97 will premiere on Disney+ on March 20.
