Wytheville teen charged after allegedly pointing replica gun at Sheetz customers

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — The Wytheville Police Department says a teen was charged after allegedly pointing a replica gun at people walking into Sheetz on Tuesday morning.

According to the police, around 7:40 a.m. on May 7, officers received a 911 call about a man driving a black Nissan SUV who was allegedly brandishing a gun and pointing it at people entering the store.

Officers responded to the scene and after canvasing the area, they found the suspected SUV stopped in the Walmart parking lot.

As the investigation developed, the driver was identified as 18-year-old Ayden Crue Elswick, from Wytheville. Officers said they discovered a Glock Replica airsoft pistol in the SUV.

“The replica weapon appeared to be a real Glock pistol when observed by anyone it is pointed at,” said the police department on social media.

According to the Virginia Code, it is a crime “to point, hold or brandish any firearm or any air or gas operated weapon or any object similar in appearance, whether capable of being fired or not, in such manner as to reasonably induce fear in the mind of another or hold a firearm or any air or gas operated weapon in a public place in such a manner as to reasonably induce fear in the mind of another of being shot or injured.”

Elswick has been charged with 18.2-282 Brandishing a Firearm.

He was released on an unsecured bond.
