WVDOH worker in critical condition after being hit by a car

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — A West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) road worker is in critical condition after being hit by a car.

UPDATE: Gauley Bridge woman still missing in Fayette County

The accident happened on Thursday, March 14, 2024 in the Clarksburg area.

The worker was reportedly part of three person crew that was setting up traffic controls at the scene of an accident that happened on U.S. 50 in Clarksburg. At around 9:45 P.M., a car crashed into the work zone they were responding to. The work zone was lit up with clear flashing lights and signals. All workers were also wearing hard hats and lights as well.

The worker is currently staying at Ruby Memorial Hospital with head and shoulder injuries. Updates about his condition will be provided when they become available.

Transportation Secretary Jimmy Wriston, P.E., responded to the situation saying, “The most important safety component in the state’s work zones is the person behind the wheel.”

“There would be far fewer accidents if drivers would pay attention and obey the law in work zones. That’s what keeps you safe and it’s what keeps our workers safe,” Wriston said.

“Please, hear this: Obey the law in work zones,” Wriston concluded.
