Wust, Verweij win 1,500m races at Euro champs

HAMAR, Norway (AP) — Double Olympic gold medalist Ireen Wust and former World Champion Koen Verweij of the Netherlands won the 1,500-meter events in the European Speed Skating Championships on Sunday.

Verweij finished the race in 1 minute, 45.69 seconds, 0.23 seconds ahead of Poland's Konrad Niedzwiedzki in second. Zbigniew Brodka, also of Poland, finished third, 0.26 seconds behind.

Earlier Sunday, Wust easily won the women's 1,500-meter event in another convincing demonstration ahead of next month's Olympics in Sochi, clocking 1 minute, 54.87 seconds.

Russia's Yuliya Skokova was second, 2.15 seconds behind, and Yvonne Nauta of the Netherlands finished third, 2.41 seconds back.

The 27-year-old Wust also won the 500-meter and 3,000-meter events on Saturday.
