WR's Mata player of the week

Sep. 15—West Rusk senior quarterback Andon Mata is the Chick-Fil-A / Kilgore News Herald player of the week for his performance in the Raiders' 24-17 win over Mineola last Friday night.

Mata had touchdown passes to Geremiah Smith and to leading receiver Will Jackson, and also had a touchdown run, to bring the Raiders all the way back from a 17-0 deficit to win the game. West Rusk also got big help from Torami Dixon and Noah Murphy, who recovered fumbles on back-to-back Mineola possessions.

Mata finished 17-of-29 for 212 yards, the two touchdowns, and 30 yards and a score on six carries.

In other performances of note from week two:

Kilgore's Jermaine Roney had six catches for two touchdowns and for 92 yards in Kilgore's loss to Pine Tree.

Brannigan Willige had three touchdowns — one rushing and two receiving — and had four catches for 122 yards in Sabine's loss to Daingerfield.

Also in that game for Sabine, Carter Patterson had 12 tackles for Sabine, including a tackle for a loss, a pass break-up and a forced fumble. Daylon Branhma had 14 tackles and a sack, and Kile Stripland had eight tackles, a forced fumble, an interception and a pass break-up.
