Wrong-way driver killed in head-on collision near Mare Island

(BCN) — A man driving a blue Chrysler PT Cruiser died in a head-on collision while driving the wrong way on state Highway 37 in the vicinity of Mare Island early Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver entered the highway going westbound in the eastbound lane and collided with a gold Nissan about 2:26 a.m., Officer Michael Barday said. The driver of the Nissan was not seriously injured, he said.

The highway patrol was investigating whether the Chrysler’s driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs, Barday said.

Highway 37, also known as Sears Point Road, extends along the north shore of San Pablo Bay and connects U.S. Highway 101 and Interstate Highway 80.
