On March 13, two CHP officers who were sitting in their patrol vehicles after a traffic stop on eastbound I-80 near Mace Boulevard in the Davis area of Yolo County said they were injured after being hit by the alleged wrong-way driver, Samuel Hanawalt, 33. Law enforcement suspect the crash was intentional.

Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced on Monday that Hanawalt is facing charges that include attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and driving violations. He added that the charges include “enhancements” which means the acts were done with cruelty, great harm or violence, viciousness, and/or more.

“Acts of violence like this against our officers will not be tolerated,” said CHP Assistant Commissioner Ezery Beauchamp in statement on March 15. “Our CHP detectives and investigative personnel will work collaboratively with the district attorney’s office to ensure this individual is held accountable for his actions.”

Hanawalt is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Dept. 1 of the Yolo County Superior Court.
