Wrong-way driver arrested after head-on crash in SLO County. Two other cars were involved

A man driving the wrong way on Highway 101 triggered a collision with two other drivers Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, 24-year-old Santa Maria resident David Lopez, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the CHP stated in a news release.

About 5:13 a.m., Lopez entered southbound Highway 101, south of TV Tower Road, “traveling in a direct path to crash head on” with another driver, 37-year-old Duane Adent of Atascadero, the CHP said.

Adent attempted to swerve out of the way, but the left front of his car was hit, causing his vehicle to spin out and roll over several times, according to the news release.

Lopez had minor injuries. Adent had moderate injuries and was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

The crash caused debris to fly out and strike the front end and windshield of another car. Its driver, Templeton resident Chris Beard, 51, did not suffer any injuries.

Lopez continued to travel in the wrong direction, according to the release.
