Worthington to close Medina, NY, operations
Worthington to consolidate NY manufacturing facilities to Ohio, could displace 174 workers
MEDINA, N.Y. (AP) -- Worthington Industries Inc. said Friday that it will close its BernzOmatic hand torch manufacturing operations in Medina, N.Y., in a move that may displace 174 workers. The company said it plans to consolidate operations into its existing facility in Chilton, Wis., in order to lower expenses and maximize its available production capacity.
The closure of the Medina operation is expected to be complete by mid-2014.
Worthington said that workers at the Medina site will have the opportunity to transfer to the Chilton facility. Those that opt not to go will be given severance and outplacement services.
The company acquired the Medina operation in July 2011 when it bought the BernzOmatic business from Irwin Tool Co., a subsidiary of Newell Rubbermaid. The facility originally opened in 1969.
Worthington is a metal manufacturing company based in Columbus, Ohio.
Shares of Worthington fell 34 cents to close at $32.72.
