Worthing, Burkhart compete at MAC Wrestling Tournament

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Two area college wrestlers had the opportunity to compete in the same weight class at the 2024 MAC Wrestling Championships at Kent State.

Clarion redshirt junior John Worthing made the MAC semis and fell to top seed Alex Cramer of Central Michigan 11-0. Worthing, a Tioga High School graduate, won his first two matches of the day by pin beating Bloomsburg’s Nolan Zeigler at 2:36 of the first period. John then pinned fourth seed Ty Stolzfus at 2:21 of the first period in the quarterfinals.

Next up for Worthing (16-9) is the consolation round of wrestling to see if he can come back for a third place finish. Worthing made his first appearance at the NCAA Tournament last year for Clarion where he won two matches.

Athens grad AJ Burkhart of Kent State has the opportunity wrestleback to potentially face Worthing. Burkhart dropped his opening round match Friday to Dominic Lopez of Southern Illinois 6-3. Burkart, a 2022 NCAA qualifier while at Lehigh and now a grad student, went on to beat DeAndre Nassar of Cleveland State 5-2 advancing to the consolation quarterfinals.

If Burkhart (8-7) wins his next match, he will face Worthing in the consolation semifinal round. Stay with 18 Sports for more on the progress of both wrestlers as the weekend progresses.
