‘It’s worse than ridiculous’: Seminole man ends up with 2 addresses, a lot of confusion

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — When you move, obviously your address changes, right? The last thing you’d expect is for your address to change if you don’t move. But it happened to a Seminole man, and it’s making life complicated.

Helmut Rinas lives along Oakhurst Road in Seminole. His deed says Oakhurst Road, property records say Oakhurst Road, and even the county street sign right beside his home says Oakhurst Road.

But for some reason, without notifying him, the county recently changed his address to 137th street.

“It’s worse than ridiculous,” Rinas said. “I can’t even understand their reasoning.”

Helmet tells me he found out when he suddenly couldn’t get packages delivered to his address and his mortgage company became confused about where his house is located.

“If I bought the house on 137th Street, no problem,” Rinas said. “But I bought the house on Oakhurst.”

How did this happen? Consider this. Rinas lives on a section of Oakhurst Road, sandwiched between 137th street on either side. And then Oakhurst veers off and continues.

After Rinas raised concerns with county officials, he says they finally agreed to change the address back officially. But the message, Helmet tells me, didn’t make it to the post office, and now his bank insists he use the postal address.

“I put in that address change and they just replied you’re verified postal service address is 137th Street,” Rinas. “You want to use that.”

He tells me the post office solution was simply to deliver mail addressed to his house number, on either Oakhurst or 137th to his house.

Not happy with that solution, he called Better Call Behnken.

We heard back from both the postal service and the county and received conflicting information. The county says the technical address is 137th Street but that because of this confusion they changed it back to Oakhurst. A county spokesman says this was reported to the local post office.
however, a spokeswoman for the postal service tells us the county has not submitted the proper address change forms and this won’t be cleared up until they do.
