Although highly anticipated, the third film about the adventures of Sylvester Stallone and his muscled friends only grossed a disappointing $31.2M in its first weekend.
Already illegally downloaded over 2 million times, did "The Expendables 3" suffer because of piracy? While the two first films hit the jackpot, the new movie only $16.2M grossed in the US and $15M in the rest of the world. Those figures leave the film in fourth place in the worldwide box office.
Overtaken by the new "Ninja Turtles" movie last week, "Guardians of the Galaxy" has recovered this weekend and it has taken the lead of the international ranking again with $57.8M grossed in its third week ($24.8M in the US and $33.1M in the rest of the world). In total the movie has grossed over $418M.
The reptilian mutants are just behind, with $54M in takings for their second weekend, but they keep the lead in the US with $28.4M.
Released in June, Dreamworks' animated movie "How To Train Your Dragon 2" snatches third place with $38.2M, just above Sylvester Stallone and friends.
A real success in the US upon its release, Luc Besson's "Lucy" is fifth with $27.3M takings ($5.3M in the US and $22M in the rest of the world).
"The Admiral: Roaring Currents," now the biggest-ever film at the South Korea, takes sixth in the worldwide box office with $20M, closely followed by "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."
