World's richest people: Elon Musk and Bill Gates are now tied for second place

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates are now tied as the world's second richest men after Tesla shares hit a record high on Monday.

Both of their net worths are set at $128 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index.

The index, which tracks the world's 500 richest people, has Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in the number one position with a net worth of over $182 billion.

The news comes after the S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the electric carmaker would join the S&P 500 index on Dec. 21.

On Monday, Tesla stock jumped 6.6% and closed at an all-time high of $521.90 per share.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated up to $100 million to improve detection, isolation and treatment efforts amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
