World Series champion Troy Glaus fired by Buchanan. Familiar name steps in to help

Buchanan High fired former Major League Baseball Player Troy Glaus as the Bears’ baseball coach and brought back Brad Fontes in an interim role, the school announced Monday afternoon.

“We wish Coach Glaus well in his future endeavors and thank him for his work on behalf of Buchanan baseball,” Buchanan principal Omar Hemaidan said in a news release. “I’m pleased Coach Fontes has agreed to step in and support the team through this transition and lend his high caliber experience to our students to finish the season.”

Players were told about the move from coaches and administrators at the school.

Buchanan is 9-14 this season and was swept by Clovis West last week. In the Tri-River Athletic Conference, the Bears are in fifth place at 2-7.

Glaus was brought in to replace Fontes, who stepped down in June 2023 to deal with health issues.

Fontes started as the head at Hoover in 1999. He also spent time at Reedley and Central, according to section historian Bob Barnett.

His overall record is 283-237, including 111-23 at Buchanan, Barnett said.

Soon after Fontes’ departure, Glaus was hired by the school and said the job was appealing to him.

Glaus was in Major League Baseball for 13 seasons after he was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 1998.
