Man killed while working on new San Francisco 49ers stadium was hit by elevator counterweight
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- State workplace safety investigators say the man killed while working on the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium was an elevator mechanic who was standing on a ladder at the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was hit by a counterweight.
Authorities identified the man as 63-year-old Donald White. He was found dead around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday.
White was a certified elevator mechanic employed by Schindler Elevator Corp.
The company is a subcontractor for the stadium's general contractor, Turner-Devcon.
Turner-Devcon officials say work on the stadium has been stopped until Thursday.
Construction on the $1.3 billion Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara began in April 2012. The 49ers are expected to move there for the 2014 season.
In a statement, the 49ers say they are "deeply saddened" by the death.
