I wore the new Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara while getting 'hot and heavy'

Yahoo Beauty would like to introduce you to The New-New, a column by Beauty Director Dana Oliver on the latest products, tools, and treatments on which she’d happily spend her hard-earned money.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara has been a mainstay in my makeup bag. With one coat, this cult product makes my short, stubby lashes look thicker, longer, and darker. And it literally lasts all day and night. If I’m feeling really frisky, I’ll do two swipes, but that’s only on special occasions.

I’ve dabbled with other editor-approved products, such as Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara, and L’Oréal Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara. They’re all pretty good, but my eyelashes have never quite fluttered the way they do with Perversion. So when Urban Decay unveiled its new Troublemaker Mascara, I was certainly intrigued.

The brand touts its latest launch as a “do-it-all mascara that lengthens, curls, separates, and volumizes in just a few swipes almost 13.7 times.” That’s a hefty promise for a small tube of makeup.

The design itself is pretty impressive, boasting a combination of short and long bristles that easily grips onto eyelashes and gets superclose to the lash line to create a sultry, no eyeliner-needed effect. The bristles are also spaced out enough to allow for an effortless application that minimizes clumps. And the iridescent rainbow-inspired packaging is pretty enchanting to stare at.

To truly test out the brand’s claim that this mascara “withstands all kinds of hot and heavy situations,” I wore it while sweating it out in yoga and riding the subway. Here’s what happened:

Mascara test No. 1

I typically go bare-faced for workouts, but didn’t possess a single ounce of guilt when I wore Troublemaker to an evening Vinyasa Jam Session at Mindful Elephant Yoga studio in Philadelphia. I sweated more than I typically did flowing through mountain, high plank, and downward-facing dog poses to the sounds of Boys II Men, the Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears. By the time I peeled my sweaty forehead off of my yoga mat and peered into a mirror, I noticed that my lashes were still going strong with length and volume. While all that perspiration did result in the tiniest bit of mascara flaking, it was nothing outrageously noticeable enough to draw comparisons to raccoon eyes.

Mascara test No. 2

Anyone who’s ever experienced the West 4th Street Subway Station in New York City knows that it is hot as hell down there. My friends and I are convinced it’s where Satan lives. So I gave the mascara a whirl while painstakingly walking through this station. Like expected, it glided on effortlessly. But shockingly, it did not smear or flake while I made my way from the uptown to the downtown sides. I also didn’t need to do any touch-ups throughout my workday. Now, that’s what I like!

My final thoughts: Urban Decay’s Troublemaker Mascara is definitely a must-have if you want a mascara that will make your lashes look better than ever before without putting in too much effort. But I would strongly recommend prepping with a lash primer to prevent any flaking if you have oily skin, tend to perspire a lot, or like to get it in while wearing makeup.

Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara ($24) will be available Sept. 5 at Sephora, Ulta, Macy’s, and on urbandecay.com.
